SPOTLIGHT ON: MARILYN MONROE – QUOTES.

My first taste of Old Hollywood was seeing photos of Marilyn Monroe when I was a child. My Aunty Gayle, who passed away in 2006, adored her and her house was full of Marilyn pictures and books, some of which I have been lucky enough to inherit. So when I was old enough, I started to watch Old Hollywood movies out of curiosity, to see if the magic matched the pictures and books that had surrounded my childhood. It did and the passion soon followed. And as I started my career as an actor, Marilyn’s life and words began to resonate with me more and more.

Often misunderstood, deeply sensitive and remarkably talented, Marilyn struggled to fit into a world that could be often cruel and unfair. Her star power has long outlived her and she amasses new fans with each generation that follows. I often wonder what her career would have looked like if she had lived longer or even perhaps been taken more seriously, which she desperately longed for.

Over the next week, I will be discussing the things I love most about Marilyn. Her life, her loves, her movies and her quotes. I hope to honour her beyond her looks and image.

So without further ado, here are my top 10 Marilyn Monroe quotes:

“Keep smiling, because life is a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.”

“Millions of people live their entire lives without finding themselves. But it is something I must do.”

“Dreaming about being an actress is more exciting than being one.”

“If I’d observed all the rules, I’d never got anywhere.”

“I restore myself when I’m alone.”

“A woman knows by intuition, or instinct, what is best for herself.”

“Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul.”

“We are all of us stars, and we deserve to twinkle.”

“The truth is, I’ve never fooled anyone. I’ve let men sometimes fool themselves.”

“I defy gravity.”
